ZACHARY C. SMITH

I'm Zach Smith and if you're reading this, welcome to my website. You can find out anything you need to know about me here including my stories, multimedia and podcasts.

 

I graduated from Michigan State in 2014 with two degrees, one in journalism and another in video production. While at MSU I worked at the student newspaper, The State News, for nearly three years covering nearly every aspect of MSU athletics. For the first three years of my college career, I was a trombone player in the Spartan Marching Band. (Golden Tate was just a few feet away from me when he dove into the band in 2009)

 

I interned at U.S. Soccer Federation during the summer of 2013 and was in charge of all the content surrounding the Centennial edition of the U.S. Open Cup including features, social media updates and managing the website. I was also part of the five-man team that went to Houston for the Development Academy Finals Week. We created multiple pieces of content each day, including stories and videos, during the week-long tournament. 

 

Just a few months after graduating, I moved from mid-Michigan to South Texas to work at the Laredo Morning Times right on the border with Mexico and have been here for nearly two years. We have eight local high schools, an independent baseball team, two small colleges and, until last year, a hugely successful minor league soccer team. I worked at least two desk shifts a week where I was responsible for editing stories, photos and cutlines, paginating and managing LMT social media accounts. 

 

After spending two years in Laredo, I moved to the Austin, Texas area to become the sports editor at the Hill Country News, a weekly newspaper based in Cedar Park, Texas. It is a weekly, but I treat it like a daily, posting content every night and running the various social media accounts. I am in charge of covering all sports at six high schools in the area, minor league teams representing the San Antonio Spurs, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Stars. I'm also credentialed to cover the Houston Texans full time.
